Armenia’s ombudsman seeks probe after violence against soldier

Armenia’s ombudsman has received a report of alleged violence against a serviceman, prompting an urgent visit by representatives of the Human Rights Defender’s Office to a military unit, Sputnik Armenia reports.

The representatives spoke with several soldiers, including the serviceman who was the subject of the report, the office said.

Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan said violence and hazing in the armed forces were unacceptable and called on the relevant authorities to conduct an internal investigation and, where there were grounds, a comprehensive inquiry.

She said the public should be informed of the results.
