Armenia’s Pashinyan announces launch of Akhalkalaki–Kars railway

24 May 2026 09:57

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced the launch of the Akhalkalaki–Kars railway, stating that it has begun operating, according to a post he published on Facebook.

“I am pleased to announce that the Akhalkalaki–Kars railway, as well as Azerbaijan’s railway, is now open for export and import to Armenia. This is a major event in our country’s economic life. I thank our partners from Türkiye and Georgia,” Pashinyan wrote.

He noted that Armenia currently has railway connections with Russia via Georgia and Azerbaijan, as well as access to China through Russia and Kazakhstan. He added that the new route via Georgia and Türkiye also provides connectivity to the European Union.

The Armenian prime minister also stated that direct rail links between Armenia and Türkiye, as well as Armenia and Azerbaijan, are expected to be launched soon, followed by a connection between Armenia and Iran via Nakhchivan. “We will witness these developments in the near future as a result of the TRIPP project,” he said.
