Armenia: Senior academic and sports figures detained in corruption probe

Authorities in Yerevan have detained several individuals, including senior university and sports administration figures, in connection with an alleged falsification case.

Vice-Rector of the Armenian State Pedagogical University, Mariam Ispiryan and her son were detained on April 18, the newspaper Zhoghovurd reports.

“According to preliminary information, the detention was carried out as part of proceedings concerning alleged falsification,” the publication wrote.

The newspaper reports that Ispiryan had employed her son at the university, although he allegedly did not attend work.

According to Zhoghovurd, the same case also led to the detention of the First Deputy President of the Armenian Chess Federation, Smbat Lputian.
