21 October 2024 18:06

Armenia will participate in the BRICS summit, scheduled to take place from October 22 to 24 in Kazan, Russia, Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan said in parliament.

According to Grigoryan, Yerevan is not discussing the possibility of becoming a member of the group, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

When asked by a journalist whether Armenia was considering applying for BRICS membership, Grigoryan replied, "No, no, not at this stage."

Earlier, the Armenian government confirmed that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will attend the BRICS summit.

Notably, BRICS, an intergovernmental organisation formed in 2006, initially included Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa later became a member, and starting in 2024, the group will also admit Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia.

Several other nations are vying for membership in BRICS, including Azerbaijan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bolivia, Chad, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Honduras, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uganda, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.

The forthcoming BRICS summit is set to be held in Kazan from October 22 to 24.
