Armenia signals readiness for energy trade with Azerbaijan

12 August 2026 15:51

Armenia is open to including energy in future bilateral trade with Azerbaijan, Armenian lawmaker Arman Yeghoyan has said, arguing that energy imports and exports should not be excluded from broader economic cooperation.

Yeghoyan, a member of the ruling Civil Contract faction, made the remarks in response to a question about the possibility of Azerbaijan supplying electricity to Armenia, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

“As for the import and export of energy resources or energy in general, the more routes and opportunities there are from various sources, the more beneficial it is for Armenia,” Yeghoyan said.

He stressed that energy trade should be treated in the same way as trade in other goods and services.

“The import of gas and oil, the export of electricity — energy exchange, trade, buying and selling — just as with all other goods and services, should certainly not be an exception to bilateral trade,” he said.

Yeghoyan noted that Armenia has surplus electricity at certain times of the year and sometimes seeks additional markets for its exports.

“For example, we have surplus electricity, and during certain seasons we even look for markets for it. You know that we export electricity to Iran and Georgia,” he added.
