Armenia to confiscate property of ex-president’s brother
Armenian ex-President Serzh Sargsyan’s brother Alexander Sargsyan, along with his wife and sons, have been summoned to the prosecutor's office as part of an investigation into the seizure of illegally acquired assets.
The law enforcement officers have informed them that they have examined the origins of their assets and concluded that they are subject to confiscation, Caliber.Az reports.
The prosecutor's office has not disclosed specific details about what will be seized or the total value of the assets. The reason for this uncertainty is that the defendants may present evidence of the legal origins of the assets in court.
Alexander Sargsyan and his sons, Hayk and Narek, came under scrutiny from law enforcement following the change of power in Armenia in 2018. In June 2021, the Yerevan court found Narek Sargsyan guilty of illegal possession of weapons, drug trafficking, and organizing abductions. He was sentenced to five and a half years in prison.
Narek Sargsyan fled abroad but was arrested in Prague in December 2018 using a false passport under the name Franklin Gonzalez. He was extradited to Armenia a year later.
His younger brother Hayk was accused of attempted murder in 2007, as well as illegal possession of weapons and ammunition. However, the charge was later reduced, and the case was dismissed due to the statute of limitations.
