Armenia West's bridgehead in South Caucasus – Russian expert

Russian political scientist Vladimir Kireev has described Armenia as West's bridgehead in the South Caucasus.

"For several years, the West has been balancing its support for Azerbaijan and Armenia between the two countries. However, in the last two or three months, the situation has changed, the West's strategy has changed," Kireev said in an interview with Armenian media, Caliber.Az reports.

"This is about the position of the European Union, France, and probably even the United States. Now it is quite an unambiguous support for Armenia. All the efforts of the European Union, France are aimed at supporting exactly the position of Yerevan in the conflict in the South Caucasus. Azerbaijan is being criticized. A provocative policy is being pursued against Baku, which seeks to put it out of balance, unbalance it, put it in an uncomfortable position. Armenia, in turn, is supported in every possible way, military contingents are promised.

What is the explanation for this? It is quite possible that we are talking about the fact that military bases will be placed on the territory of Armenia in order to displace Russia, in order to make Armenia a bridgehead in the South Caucasus. Accordingly, against the interests of Russia, against the interests of Iran, and in the long term against the interests of Türkiye.

It is quite possible that the collective West will move from rhetorical devices to direct and actual support of Armenia on the ground by some armed contingent. We are talking about an unknown number of people. It is also unclear what status they will be in. Arms are already being supplied from France. And apparently there will be people as well. Armenia has been chosen as its bridgehead. That is why Yerevan is directly supported in its confrontation with Baku on international platforms," the political scientist added.
