Armenian deputy PM: Decision to leave EAEU to be made by citizens

16 May 2026 10:14

Armenia has acknowledged that it cannot simultaneously remain a member of both the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), according to Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan.

In an interview with Russian state news agency TASS, Grigoryan said the issue would eventually require a clear political choice, but stressed that any final decision would be made by the Armenian public.

“We fully understand that Armenia cannot be a member of both the EAEU and the EU at the same time, and it is clear that in the future we will need to make the appropriate decision. Moreover, the decision on this matter will, of course, be made by the citizens of Armenia,” he said.

He added that there is currently no immediate need to choose between the two blocs.

Grigoryan also reaffirmed that Armenia remains a full and active member of the Eurasian Economic Union, saying the country continues to cooperate constructively and participate in all discussions and decision-making processes within the bloc.
