Armenian economy chief avoids questions on PM’s split
Armenian Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan declined to comment on reports about the breakup between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Anna Hakobyan, describing the matter as personal while speaking to journalists at the National Assembly on February 27.
According to Caliber.Az, citing Armenian media, Papoyan reacted sharply when asked whether news of the couple’s separation had come as a surprise to him.
“I can't answer questions like that. If the question is about that, I'll leave,” he said.
The minister emphasized his official role, adding: “I would like to inform you that I am the Minister of Economy of the Republic of Armenia and Deputy Chairman of the Civil Contract Party. Dear colleagues, if you are going to discuss personal issues concerning any individual, I would prefer to leave.” After making the statement, he ended the conversation and departed.
Earlier the same day, Hakobyan released a video announcing that her civil marriage with Pashinyan had ended and that she was leaving the government residence.
Hakobyan said she would move into a rented apartment, explaining that a property she had purchased is still under construction. Speaking about her financial situation, she stated that 5 million drams ($13,300) remain in her bank account and that she plans to continue her work with the “My Step” foundation.
At the same time, she did not exclude the possibility of criminal prosecution related to her activities within the foundation.
