Armenian FM assault case: Another defendant jailed for 5.5 years
A court in Yerevan has sentenced Torgom Asatryan to five and a half years in prison based on the case of the assault on Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
The prosecutor had earlier requested a seven-year sentence. Asatryan has already served part of his term, as he has been under arrest since February 2023. In May 2024, another participant in the incident, Ara Badoyan, was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the same case.
Media reports recall that the incident occurred on the night of November 10, 2020, immediately after the signing of the Trilateral Statement that ended hostilities in the Second Karabakh War.
That evening, mass riots erupted near the parliament and government buildings in Yerevan. A group of protesters stormed the parliament, and later, at the intersection of Demirchyan and Proshyan streets, attacked the car of Mirzoyan, who at that time served as Speaker of the National Assembly.
The politician was dragged out of his vehicle and beaten. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition with multiple injuries.
