Armenian FM highlights commitment to long-term peace with Azerbaijan

27 September 2024 17:18

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has informed Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi about the negotiations with Azerbaijani officials during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Two officials exchanged views on recent discussions with Azerbaijan regarding the signing of a peace agreement, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.

Mirzoyan has recently met with Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in New York. The US Secretary of State also attended the meeting.

During the discussion with the Iranian minister, Mirzoyan emphasised that Yerevan has a strong commitment to achieving long-term peace in the region and highlighted the importance of Iran's position on respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of regional countries.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry's statement following the negotiations with Azerbaijan indicated that both sides expressed readiness to expedite the signing of a peace agreement.

Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stressed that Armenia launched a dialogue with Türkiye and agreed to start to normalise relations with Azerbaijan without preconditions.

“We are unlikely to succeed without the active and sincere support of the international community. Armenia has adopted a peace agenda and is following the path of demarcation and delimitation of borders with Azerbaijan,” Pashinyan stressed.

“Azerbaijan voiced its ideas on the normalisation of the Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, covering five main points. The issue is the mutual recognition of each other's territorial integrity, demarcation and delimitation of borders without territorial claims against each other,” the prime minister said.

“Having considered these proposals, we saw that, in fact, there is nothing unacceptable for us, however, we stated that these points do not affect the entire agenda of relations. We have expanded this agenda by including the issues of security, the rights of the Armenians of Karabakh region and the final status,” Pashinyan added.
