PM Kobakhidze expresses Eid al-Adha wishes to Georgia’s Muslim community

07 June 2025 09:47

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze visited the Tbilisi mosque to personally congratulate the Muslim community on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, a major religious holiday observed by Muslims around the world. He was accompanied by the chairman of the State Agency for Religious Affairs.

As reported by Georgian media, the prime minister addressed the worshippers with a message of respect and gratitude, per Caliber.Az.

“We are very proud of the relations and friendship that have developed between us. The Georgian government cares deeply about the interests of the Muslim community, and this will continue in the future. You make a great contribution to the progress and development of our country, and I would like to express my deep gratitude to you for that,” he said.

Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the Quranic account of the Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion to God, exemplified by his readiness to sacrifice his son in obedience to divine will. The holiday is traditionally observed through communal prayers, charitable giving, and the ritual sacrifice of livestock, such as sheep, goats, cows, or camels. The meat is then shared among family, neighbours, and especially those in need, emphasising the values of solidarity, generosity, and compassion.

Georgia is home to a diverse Muslim population of around 400,000 people, making up approximately 9.9% of the country’s total population. The largest Muslim groups include ethnic Azerbaijanis, Chechens (Kists), Lezgins, Meskhetian Turks, as well as some Adjarians and Abkhazians.
