Armenia’s Republican Party launches no-confidence motion against Pashinyan
The Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), led by former President Serzh Sargsyan, has initiated a political process aimed at ousting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan through a motion of no confidence.
In an official statement, the RPA called on members of the opposition faction “I Have Honor” to submit the motion, citing the government's failure to implement its programme adopted in 2021 as the primary reason for the move, Caliber.Az reports via Amenian media.
To express no confidence in the Prime Minister, at least 54 out of 107 members of parliament must vote in favour of the motion, the statement noted.
The party also emphasised that, should the process succeed, it envisions the formation of a consensus government to steer the country forward.
As part of the impeachment process against Nikol Pashinyan, the Republican Party of Armenia will nominate the party's deputy chairman Armen Ashotyan for the position of prime minister.
According to Armenian legislation, in order to start the impeachment process, the initiators must propose their own candidature for prime minister. The application can be discussed if there are 36 signatures. The two opposition factions ("Armenia" and "I Have Honor") together make up 34 deputies. Another four have independent status.
