Armenian parliament approves shorter compulsory military service

Armenia’s parliament has approved legislation reducing the length of compulsory military service, according to official results of a vote held on December 16.
The law was adopted in its second and final reading, with 65 lawmakers voting in favour, four against and 20 abstaining, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.
Under the new legislation, the mandatory term of service in Armenia’s armed forces will be reduced from two years to 18 months. The change is scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026.
