Armenian police bust over 270 protesters UPDATED/VIDEO

27 May 2024 14:19

Some 273 protesters supporting the "Tavush in the Name of Motherland" movement have been detained in Yerevan as of 13:00 on May 27, as follows from the statement by the Armenian police press service, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

The ongoing political turmoil in Armenia was followed by the agreement with Azerbaijan to a border demarcation that involves Armenia returning four villages internationally recognised as Azerbaijani territories. This move has angered many Armenians, particularly those who feel the government gave up territory without proper guarantees.

The protests also represent a broader dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Some Armenians believe his handling of the conflict with Azerbaijan has been weak, and they are demanding his resignation.

The "Tavush in the Name of Motherland" movement specifically focuses on the Tavush region, where some residents fear the border changes will restrict access to their land and leave them vulnerable.

Supporters of the "Tavush in the Name of Motherland" protest movement have been blocking interstate highways, interregional roads, and streets in Armenia's capital Yerevan since the early morning of May 27.

The Yerevan-Ashtarak and Yerevan-Armavir highways were blocked, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.

The leader of the movement, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, as promised on May 26, also blocked the road himself. He blocked the intersection of Abovyan and Sayat-Nova streets in a black SUV.

Other protesters blocked Azatutyan, Mashtots, Tigran Metz, Koryun, Moskovyan, Teryan and Hin Yerevantsi avenues.

Amid the continuation of the protests, Armenian police detained dozens of citizens in the centre of Yerevan after they tried to block Abovyan Street in the capital Yerevan.

The protests are being broadcast live by local portals.

The opposition is currently continuing to hold civil disobedience actions demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
