Armenian political analyst: France has its own goals

04 November 2023 14:37

Armenian political analyst Suren Surenyants has said that Russian policy has radically changed since 2012-2013, and after the outbreak of the Ukrainian war, it greatly changed.

“As a result of the Ukrainian war and Western sanctions, Russia is constantly looking for ways in which it can mitigate the impact of sanctions. Proceeding from this logic, Türkiye and Azerbaijan are very important countries for Russia,” he told journalists, Caliber.Az reports.

“You know, there are great changes. If until recently this region or its security system was based only on the Russian factor, then we can say that now it is based on Russia and Türkiye, that is, Türkiye’s influence has increased and now we have a security system in this region. Not only Russia is the sponsor. There are two sponsors, namely, Russia and Türkiye. It is a fact that not only Russian but Russian-Turkish influence is observed in the South Caucasus.

Obviously, in this context, there is no great Western influence. I would like to draw your attention to one circumstance. So, Russia, Türkiye and Iran have many contradictions, but one noticeable thing is that they have an unannounced consensus in blocking the entry of foreign players into this region. This is “3+3” format,” he noted.

The political analyst noted that the West in a global sense is weakening throughout the world.

“It is obvious. The West has lost the race for the global South, and the number of countries that simply do not recognise Western hegemony is increasing. Let's not forget that at the recent G-20 summit, which was held before the Arab-Israeli war, and where almost half of the countries were Western ones, they were unable to adopt a resolution on Ukraine that would condemn Russia,” Surenyants said.

“Have you seen that the West is ready to defend Armenia’s territorial integrity and security? As for the weapons that we plan to purchase, when we receive the weapons of France, then we will draw conclusions. Of course, we may not get them. By which logistics route will this military equipment be brought to Armenia? I assess this agreement positively, but can you tell me what route will be used to transport it to Armenia? Georgia has prohibited the transportation of weapons to Armenia on numerous occasions via its territory during the 44-day second Karabakh war and after it,” he said.

“Iran will not allow transporting Western weapons via its territory, this is obvious. Should Türkiye and Azerbaijan allow these weapons to be transferred to Armenia? Do not consider this transaction as a guarantee of security. France has its own goals, it does not care about the Armenians’ problems. If we consider the French president’s recent visit, everything will become clear. Effective military-technical operations occur silently. Baku may launch a preemptive strike on Armenia due to this noise, that is Azerbaijan may strike faster than we get these weapons. The political and security significance of this deal is greatly exaggerated,” the political analyst said.
