Armenian pundit: Domestic scandal in Armenia reaches its climax
Armenian political scientist Suren Surenyants has said that domestic scandal in the country has reached its climax.
"What would happen in a democratic country if a family member of a high-ranking official was accused of corruption? Of course, that official would resign," Caliber.Az quotes Surenyants as saying.
"But Armenia is an authoritarian and corrupt country, despite the government's rosy assurances.
So this is a usual intra-power squabble: Alen Simonyan will not resign, his brother's wife will soon go free (in the worst case Simonyan will abandon his brother and his family).
We can only state that the internal scandal in Armenia has reached its climax," Surenyants wrote.
To recap, late in the evening on January 31, it became known that Ani Gevorgyan, the wife of Karlen Simonyan, the brother of Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan, was detained. She is in the Investigative Committee.
"She worked for many years in one of the most famous organizations in the world – ‘Synergy’ - as a program manager. About a year and a half ago, Synergy participated in one of the tenders announced by the Ministry of Economy of Armenia, in which 4 companies participated. But the tender was cancelled and Synergy, naturally, did not win. It was these unfulfilled tenders that formed the basis of the preliminary investigation body's accusation against Ani Gevorgyan.
In fact, we learned that they are trying to detain the woman with two small children to get evidence against the other women arrested today - Deputy Minister of Economy Ani Ispiryan and Head of State Investments Department.
By the way, Ani Gevorgyan left Synergy a year ago," writes Hraparak newspaper.
