Armenian ruling party MP: Peace treaty talks with Baku underway

03 May 2023 16:17

Negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the text of a peace agreement are ongoing and it is too early to speak of the results.

The chairman of the Armenian parliament's foreign relations standing committee, MP of the ruling Civil Contract Party Sarkis Khandanyan, made the remarks on May 3, Caliber.Az reports, quoting Armenian media.

In his words, Armenia's task is "to achieve a comprehensive peace in the region, to settle relations with Azerbaijan, and to ensure the rights and security of Karabakh Armenians".

He suggested that all these topics were on the table.

"There is legal wording that needs to be clarified. The document is the result of political discussions, but international law experts should also work on the text at the end if it comes to the stage of signing. For a peace agreement to be viable, mechanisms are needed to guarantee this," the MP said.

Khandanyan explained that these mechanisms should be agreed by the sides, for example with the active involvement of the international community.

He urged to wait for the completion of the negotiations, which are still ongoing.
