Arrested Armenian lawyer’s team appeals to foreign envoys over alleged rights violations
The legal team representing Armenian lawyer Alexander Kochubaev, has issued an appeal to foreign ambassadors accredited in Armenia, citing serious violations of his rights and the unlawful nature of his arrest.
The announcement was made by Kochubaev’s lawyer, Abgar Poghosyan, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
In his statement, Poghosyan emphasized that the appeal was aimed at drawing the attention of international human rights organizations and the diplomatic community to what he described as a clear case of legal overreach and rights abuse.
“I have decided to appeal to foreign ambassadors due to the gross violations of Alexander Kochubaev’s rights and the illegality of his detention,” Poghosyan stated, underscoring the urgency of the matter.
Kochubaev was detained by officers from Armenia’s National Security Service on October 15, shortly after a court hearing related to the case of Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan and his supporters. His arrest took place outside the courthouse and has since sparked growing criticism from legal circles and civil rights advocates.
It was later confirmed that Kochubaev is facing criminal charges under Article 490 of Armenia’s Criminal Code. The provision concerns the dissemination of information deemed to discredit the honor and dignity of judicial or investigative officials.
