Astana prepares for winter gas spikes with international cooperation
Kazakhstan is working with foreign partners to prepare for spikes in gas demand during the winter months.
Alibek Zhamauov, Chairman of the Board of Kazakhstan’s leading gas company, QazaqGaz, shared this update, Caliber.Az reports, citing Kazakh media.
Although Kazakhstan is largely self-sufficient in natural gas, the significant drop in temperatures during winter still forces the country to rely on a limited amount of gas imports.
Speaking at a meeting of the public council of the Samruk-Kazyna group of companies, Zhamauov said that the company is already developing new projects in collaboration with foreign partners.
“We are currently discussing new blocks with foreign investors. I think that next year we will begin geological exploration, drill new wells, and try to find our own domestic gas for the internal market,” Zhamauov said.
At the same time, Bolat Zhamishev, Chairman of the “Kazakhstan Khalkyna” public fund for charitable and social initiatives, pointed out that new gas fields are not expected in the near future.
