Azerbaijan denounces French allegations of interference, calls them distraction

30 January 2025 20:36

Azerbaijan has firmly responded to allegations made by the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, who accused the country of "interfering" in the affairs of France's overseas territories during a debate in the French Senate on January 29.

Aykhan Hajizada, spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued a statement rejecting the accusations, labeling them as a diversionary tactic by France aimed at covering up its inaction regarding the indigenous population's demands in New Caledonia, Caliber.Az reports.

" We regret that on 29 January 2025 at the Senate discussions, Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, once again attempted to disseminate allegations about the so-called interference of Azerbaijan in overseas territories of France.

We reiterate that the comment by the Foreign Minister of France accusing Azerbaijan of overseas territories interference is an overt attempt to cover up France’s inaction vis-a-vis demands of the indigenous population of New Caledonia," Hajizada said.

The spokesperson emphasized that it is France, not Azerbaijan, that has historically interfered in regional affairs, including efforts to undermine Azerbaijan's work in promoting peace and stability.

"It was France that has always interfered in regional affairs, and tried to undermine the process led by Azerbaijan to restore peace and stability," he added.

The statement also referenced the Baku Initiative Group, an NGO dedicated to raising awareness about France’s colonial policies and issues in its overseas territories. Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry condemned efforts to discredit such groups, describing them as part of a broader attempt to impede decolonization efforts.

"Efforts to denigrate the work of such groups undermine the process of decolonization," Hajizada noted.

The Azerbaijani government also criticized France’s use of force in New Caledonia, particularly in relation to recent violence in the region.

“Instead of ending the policy of repressions against the indigenous population of New Caledonia, where as a result of the use of force at least 14 people died and many injured only last year, blackmailing against Azerbaijan demonstrates how futile France’s foreign policy strategy is," the statement underlined.

Furthermore, Azerbaijan rejected France’s attempts to use its position in international organizations to pressure global NGOs advocating against neo-colonial policies. "The abuse by France of its role and resources in multiple international organizations to put pressure on international NGO advocates aiming at propagating against neo-colonial policies is pointless and will not yield results.”

Hajizada concluded by condemning the anti-Azerbaijani claims made by the French Foreign Minister, reaffirming its commitment to supporting decolonization efforts globally. "We resolutely reject and condemn the anti-Azerbaijani claims of the French Foreign Minister."
