Azerbaijan has strategic importance for US, says Armenian pundit

Armenian political scientist Ara Poghosyan has said that Azerbaijan has strategic importance for the United States.

“Let's clearly define Azerbaijan's place in the region and its role in global politics. Azerbaijan is located at the most important junction of the Caspian basin, which Zbigniew Brzezinski calls the bottleneck of the Caspian wealth. Therefore, for the United States, Azerbaijan is of strategic importance, and the role of Armenia is tactical: to oust Russia from the region, and on the other hand, to tighten the ring around Iran,” Caliber.Az quotes Poghosyan as saying during his interview with Armenian media.

“Therefore, despite the transformations taking place in the world, the United States continues to remain in a hegemonic position in financial, economic, technological, political and military terms. That is why the United States has a broad toolkit at its disposal. To imagine this, it is enough to look at the policy towards North Korea, Russia and Iran,” the pundit says.

“Another question is that, at least in the logic of today, the United States is unlikely to take practical steps: economic, financial sanctions, as well as active military support for Armenia or direct intervention. Therefore, at the moment, the United States is trying to gain the trust of Armenia, and on the other hand, to keep Baku in suspense so that the latter does not try to settle in an anti-American domain,” Poghosyan noted.

“As for the relations between Türkiye and Russia, in some cases, they cooperate, in others, they compete. And here, unfortunately, their interests coincide. Moreover, to our regret, Iran's interests in this regard also coincide, and Iran often speaks out in favour of not allowing extra-regional forces into the region. Basically, the presence of extra-regional powers, and in this case the West, and especially the United States and France, will be carried out at the expense of the influence and ambitions of Türkiye and Russia. And this causes real concern among the main players in the region," the political scientist said.
