Azerbaijan observes moment of silence for January 20 martyrs

Today, at noon, a nationwide moment of silence reverently honoured the January 20 martyrs across Azerbaijan.
The entire country came to a standstill as traffic halted, and sirens echoed from ships, cars and trains, paying tribute to the victims of the 20 January tragedy, Report informs.
On the night of January 19-20, 1990, former Soviet troops committed an unprecedented massacre of civilians in Baku who rose up to establish an independent state and gain their sovereignty.
147 Azerbaijani citizens were killed, while 638 were injured, and 841 were illegally arrested as a result of these bloody events.
