Azerbaijan, Qatar, Syria, Türkiye highlight strategic importance of gas deliveries to Aleppo
Azerbaijan, Qatar, Syria, and Türkiye have issued a joint statement underlining the broader significance of Azerbaijani gas deliveries to Syria via Turkish territory, framing the project as a milestone for regional cooperation, post-war recovery, and humanitarian development.
Released by the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the statement described the launch of gas supplies through the upgraded pipeline from Türkiye’s Kilis Province to Aleppo as a pivotal step in strengthening ties among the four nations, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The pipeline, which has a capacity of 6 million cubic meters per day, officially began operations on August 2 and was completed in what the statement called "record time."
The four governments emphasised that the project holds strategic importance for Syria’s recovery and normalisation following years of conflict. They noted that the natural gas now being supplied to the Aleppo power plant will substantially increase electricity production, directly improving living conditions and helping to revive the Syrian economy.
The statement characterised the initiative as a major humanitarian effort and a concrete contribution to restoring essential infrastructure in the war-affected country.
Qatar’s involvement—channeled through the Qatar Fund for Development—was highlighted as a reaffirmation of its commitment to Syria’s stabilisation, particularly through support for energy and electricity sectors.
The statement concluded with a collective pledge to continue working together to promote peace, stability, and prosperity across the region.
Turkish officials echoed the message. Ömer Çelik, spokesperson for Türkiye’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), said the project demonstrates Türkiye’s central role in energy diplomacy and would significantly aid in rebuilding Syria’s devastated infrastructure and social services.
Deputy Chairman of the AKP Kürşad Zorlu noted in a social media post that BOTAŞ, the state-run Turkish pipeline operator, had completed construction of a 93-kilometer, 36-inch pipeline running from the Türkoğlu district of Kahramanmaraş to the Syrian border.
He linked the project to the broader vision of strengthening the Turkic world’s role in shaping regional order and facilitating the safe return of displaced Syrians.
Zorlu also framed the initiative as part of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s strategy of promoting “unity in language, thought, and action” through international cooperation.
Azerbaijan has began exporting natural gas to Syria via Türkiye, in a move aimed at helping restore Syria’s war-damaged power sector and strengthening Türkiye’s role as a regional energy hub.
The first deliveries were inaugurated on August 2, at a ceremony in Yavuzlu, Kilis province, attended by senior officials from Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Qatar and Syria.
The Kilis–Aleppo pipeline will initially transport 1.2 billion cubic metres of Azerbaijani gas annually to Syria, with supplies destined for power plants in Aleppo and Homs. The gas is expected to enable the generation of 1,200–1,300 megawatts of electricity, contributing to the repair of Syria’s damaged electrical grid.
