Azerbaijan participating in IRENA Council meeting in UAE

25 October 2024 14:43

The Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA) under the Energy Ministry has announced that Azerbaijan is represented at the 28th meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Council in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Head of the Development of Renewable Energy Sources Areas Department at AREA Fagan Abdurahmanov participated in the meeting, AREA told Caliber.Az.

The event highlighted Azerbaijan's goals and ongoing projects in renewable energy, including the development of offshore wind energy and green energy zones.

Azerbaijan is a member of the IRENA Council. The Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency, established under Presidential Decree #1159 on September 22, 2020, is governed by an approved charter.

As outlined in the charter, the agency plays a pivotal role in shaping and implementing state policy regarding renewable energy sources and their efficient utilisation.

It is responsible for organising, regulating, and coordinating activities within this sector, while also enhancing the investment appeal of renewable energy initiatives. The agency’s primary objectives include increasing the share of renewable energy sources in installed electricity generation capacity to 30 per cent by 2030, transforming liberated territories into a "Green Energy Zone," and fostering private sector participation in renewable energy projects.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is a leading global intergovernmental organisation focused on energy transformation. It serves as the principal platform for international collaboration, assisting countries in their energy transitions while providing cutting-edge data and analyses on technology, innovation, policy, finance, and investment.

IRENA promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, ocean, solar, and wind energy. Its goal is to foster sustainable development, enhance energy access, and ensure energy security, contributing to economic and social resilience and a climate-proof future. IRENA’s membership includes 169 countries and the EU.

Together, these members shape the agency’s strategic direction and programmatic activities, aligning them with global energy discussions and priorities aimed at accelerating the transition to renewable-based energy systems worldwide.
