On September 24 in New York, as part of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, a special session titled “Global Movement to Improve Survival and Reduce Suffering for Children with Cancer and Other Catastrophic Diseases” took place.
Organised by the Republic of Uzbekistan together with the World Health Organisation, the event was attended by Azerbaijan’s First Lady, Mehriban Aliyeva and her daughters, Leyla Aliyeva and Arzu Aliyeva, as per local media.
A group photo was taken.
Ziroatkhon Mirziyoyeva, First Lady of the Republic of Uzbekistan and one of the session’s organisers, and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus spoke about the global importance of the issues under discussion.
Türkiye’s First Lady Emine Erdoğan and other speakers also shared their views.
The session’s primary purpose was to draw the attention of the global community to this urgent problem and to emphasise its severity: according to statistics cited at the meeting, roughly 200,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer each year and about half of them die.
The event continued with panel discussions.
