Azerbaijan, UN agency discuss climate finance, mine action, and global development efforts PHOTO
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Rebeca Grynspan, during the 12th Global Baku Forum to discuss key global and regional issues, including climate finance, mine action, and Azerbaijan’s role as a donor country.
The discussions focused on various aspects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN, including efforts to combat landmine threats, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
Minister Bayramov highlighted Azerbaijan’s role as the host and president of the 29th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29). He emphasised that the country’s collaboration with the UN in organising the event has been exemplary and stressed the importance of maintaining this positive momentum in the future.
The Azerbaijani minister also elaborated on the country’s international aid initiatives as a donor state. He noted Azerbaijan’s contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in supporting developing countries in their fight against the virus and aiding their post-pandemic recovery.
Discussions also touched on the progress achieved within the COP29 framework. Grynspan was briefed on key developments, including the establishment of a new collective quantified goal on climate finance and the agreement on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which regulates carbon markets. Additionally, various initiatives launched under COP29 were reviewed in detail.
The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on other matters of shared interest, reaffirming the commitment of both sides to continued cooperation.
