Azerbaijani FM engages global leaders on COP29, regional security On margins of UN General Assembly

28 September 2024 09:38

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov held a series of significant meetings on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, focusing on climate action and regional security concerns.

In a key discussion with UN Under Secretary General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Rabab Fatima, Bayramov addressed the agenda for COP29, emphasizing the urgent need for climate finance and development strategies tailored for vulnerable nations, including least developed countries, landlocked developing countries, and small island states, Caliber.Az reports.

The minister highlighted their unique challenges in the face of global climate change.

Bayramov also met with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud to discuss the ongoing normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

They explored opportunities for collaboration across various sectors, such as economy, trade, investment, humanitarian aid, and tourism. The two ministers also touched upon the forthcoming COP29 conference and the region's post-conflict dynamics.

Following the bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the UNGA79, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the mutual short stay visa exemption for holders of diplomatic, special and service passports was signed between Jeyhun Bayramov, and Faisal bin Farhan.

Furthering diplomatic engagements, Bayramov conversed with Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop, focusing on bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly within the context of Azerbaijan's COP29 presidency.

In another notable meeting, Bayramov alerted Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp to the issues surrounding Armenia's militarization.

He elaborated on the post-conflict realities, ongoing reconstruction challenges in liberated territories, and the threats posed by landmines and Armenia's territorial claims enshrined in its legal documents, which he argued are detrimental to the peace agenda.

Lastly, in a meeting with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Bayramov reviewed Azerbaijan's preparations for COP29 and reiterated concerns regarding Armenia’s military buildup, asserting that these developments pose a significant risk to regional stability and peace.

The Azerbaijani Minister provided a detailed account of the progress made in preparation for Azerbaijan's hosting of COP29, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

During the meeting, Bayramov reiterated the dangers posed by Armenia’s continuing territorial claims and military buildup, asserting that these factors jeopardize the peace agenda and the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The discussions concluded with an exchange of views on additional topics of mutual interest, further solidifying diplomatic ties.

Through these dialogues, Minister Bayramov is actively reinforcing Azerbaijan’s diplomatic efforts and commitment to both climate action and regional peace.
