"Two years have passed since the destructive earthquake in the Turkish city of Kahramanmaraş. With deep sorrow, we remember the victims of this catastrophe, which led to significant human losses and widespread destruction in our brotherly nation of Türkiye. May Allah have mercy on them."
The statement continues: "We hope that such tragedies, which deeply shook both brotherly Türkiye and our own country and people, will never be repeated. We wish that the Turkish state and people always live in well-being and prosperity."
Notably, on February 6, 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Türkiye near the northern Syrian border, followed by a second powerful 7.5 magnitude tremor nearly nine hours later.
This tragedy, one of the deadliest in Türkiye since 1999, heavily affected Gaziantep, a city home to many Syrian refugees and humanitarian organizations. The quakes claimed at least 56,000 lives, with the toll likely higher as authorities stopped counting. Among the victims were several aid workers.
More than 230,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed in Türkiye, while 10,600 buildings in northwest Syria were impacted, including 3,500 in Aleppo, many in urgent need of repairs.
