Lieutenant Anar Talibov, an Azerbaijani national serving in the Russian army, was killed in combat operations during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Earlier this month, Timur Aliyev, 36, was reported killed during fighting in Ukraine’s Luhansk region, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Since the large-scale war in Ukraine began in February 2022, at least 60 ethnic Azerbaijanis serving in the Ukrainian army have been killed, according to Gabil Osmanli, Press Secretary of the United Diaspora of Ukrainian Azerbaijanis.
Osmanli stated that both Ukrainian citizens and Azerbaijanis with residence permits are among the deceased, alongside an estimated 70-80 civilian casualties.
At the start of the conflict, there were approximately 500,000 Azerbaijanis living in Ukraine, around 100,000 of whom were citizens. Osmanli noted that ethnic Azerbaijanis continue to fight in the Ukrainian army, nearly 1,000 days into the war.
Elkhan Nuriyev, head of the Audit Commission of the Union of Ukrainian Officers, highlighted the absence of official data on Azerbaijani casualties. However, unofficial estimates suggest approximately 100 Azerbaijanis—both military personnel and civilians—have died in the conflict.
As of September 2024, around 1,000 Azerbaijanis, including individuals from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia, are reportedly fighting on the side of Ukraine.
