Baku–Yerevan agreement shifted South Caucasus towards peace, Costa says
European Council President António Costa has said that the agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia has shifted the South Caucasus towards a more peaceful trajectory, describing recent developments as historic for the region’s long-term stability.
Speaking at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Costa expressed gratitude to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for hosting the gathering and noted the participation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev via video link.
He characterised the agreement between Baku and Yerevan as a milestone that has helped reorient the region towards peace amid broader global instability.
"This EPC summit in Armenia is truly historic. For the first time, we’re meeting here in the South Caucasus. The agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan is a story of peace in Europe that must be celebrated," he said.
He also pointed to improving relations involving Türkiye and Armenia as part of a wider regional transformation.
Costa underlined that deeper cooperation in areas such as transport corridors, energy links and digital infrastructure is strengthening mutual trust between the countries of the South Caucasus.
He suggested that these initiatives not only facilitate the movement of goods, data, electricity and people, but also contribute to job creation and closer regional connectivity through practical collaboration and shared growth.
According to Costa, the European Union is prepared to act as a reliable partner in supporting this evolving process.
