Belarus president warns of external threats during upcoming elections Reaffirms commitment to nuclear safety
Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has warned that the upcoming presidential election campaign in 2025 may serve as a pretext for external aggression against the country.
He expressed confidence that attempts to destabilize Belarus will ultimately prove futile, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
"Another reason for external attacks on Belarus will obviously be the presidential election campaign," Lukashenko remarked, indicating that adversaries are likely already devising plans to "overthrow the regime" and seek financial backing for such efforts—a trend he claims recurs every five years.
Emphasizing his determination to maintain national stability, Lukashenko stated, “We have neither permitted nor will we permit the situation to become destabilized and plunge the country into chaos.”
In a related context, Lukashenko also addressed nuclear safety concerns during a meeting with Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
He assured Grossi that Belarus is fully committed to ensuring nuclear safety within the region.
“We will do everything necessary to ensure regional nuclear safety. We are rational individuals and do not engage in reckless actions.”
He further expressed appreciation for Grossi's oversight of safety measures at the Kursk and Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plants.
