Meningitis outbreak in Kent, UK, claims two lives as cases rise to 34
The number of cases linked to a meningitis outbreak in Kent has risen to 34, up from 29, as health authorities race to vaccinate students and other at-risk groups.
According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), 23 cases have been confirmed, with a further 11 “under investigation," Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The outbreak has so far claimed the lives of two students, including 18-year-old Juliette Kenny, described by her family as “fit, healthy and strong,” and another University of Kent student.
On March 20 and into the weekend, hundreds queued outside the University of Kent campus clinic for meningitis vaccinations. NHS Kent and Medway reported that, as of the evening of March 19, 5,794 vaccines had been administered and 11,010 courses of antibiotics distributed across the county.
Six clinics remain operational across Kent to provide vaccines and antibiotics for those eligible. Authorities are urging students and residents in affected areas to come forward promptly for treatment.
