Belarus to assist Azerbaijan in establishing agricultural hubs in Aghdam

17 April 2025 20:46

A meeting of the Belarus-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation will be gathering in Baku this year.

News of the event was confirmed by the Belarusian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Dmitry Pinevich, during a recent talk to the local press, Caliber.Az reports.

He further informed the media representatives that a joint effort between the two countries' agricultural institutions will see the establishment of a agricultural hub, known as a "Agrargorodok" (eng.: Agrotown) in the Azerbaijani city of Aghdam, expected to become operational in 2027.

“Work on the organization of the Agrotown is ongoing. Its opening is scheduled for 2027. I’m impressed by the work being done in the liberated territories.”

The diplomat also shared his amazement at the scale of the works carried out across the liberated areas, stressing the fact that he is well aware of the impact a military occupation leaves behind on the land, describing himself as a representative of a country that has faced similar experiences.

“During my visit to Karabakh, I was struck by the scale of the destruction, especially in the ruined villages. While passing through the Fuzuli district, I witnessed the demining process. I’m impressed by the pace of reconstruction in Aghdam, particularly the construction of the hospital,” Ambassador Pinevich stated.

The concept of Agrotowns are designed to combine the lifestyle of rural living with the conveniences of urban infrastructure, including utilities, transportation, schools, and healthcare and are widely spread across Belarus. In 2005, Minsk launched the national program to revitalize rural areas by developing 1,500 such towns with improved infrastructure and services. They are legally recognized as a third-level administrative unit under Belarusian law.
