Biden: US to strive for ceasefire in Gaza in coming days
US President Joe Biden has said that the US, Israel, and mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye are set to make an attempt in the coming days to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
"In the coming days, the US will make another attempt, in collaboration with Türkiye, Egypt, Qatar, Israel, and other countries, to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza alongside the release of hostages," he said, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The president also added that Washington aims to "end the war" by removing Hamas radical group from power in the Palestinian enclave. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that President Biden will begin making efforts to achieve a ceasefire starting on November 27.
"President Biden intends to begin work on the Gaza settlement, instructing his envoys to reach out to representatives of Turkey, Qatar, Egypt, and other regional players," he said.
Earlier, Israel's Security Cabinet officially approved a ceasefire plan in Lebanon. Shortly after, Biden announced that the agreement between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah stipulates the restoration of Lebanon's control over its territory within 60 days.
Following this, the Israeli army will gradually withdraw from Lebanese territory, and civilians from both sides will soon be able to safely return to their communities and begin rebuilding.
The situation in the Middle East escalated sharply after armed Hamas supporters from the Gaza Strip infiltrated Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, carrying out killings of residents in border towns and taking more than 240 hostages. In response, Israel launched a military operation in the enclave aimed at dismantling the military and political infrastructure of the Hamas movement and freeing all hostages.
