BIG: New Caledonia independence bloc calls for full break from France
New Caledonia’s main pro-independence alliance has unveiled a new political manifesto demanding full sovereignty from France, framing the move as a rejection of a continued colonial status quo.
On February 3, 2026, the Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) publicly presented the “Kanaky Agreement,” a document calling for the complete independence of Kanaky from France, according to the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The agreement is positioned as a direct response to the Bougival Accord, a French-initiated framework that, according to independence supporters, seeks to preserve Kanaky’s political future within existing colonial structures. The FLNKS argues that the Bougival process limits the Kanak people’s right to self-determination and perpetuates institutional dependence on Paris.
Described as a political and ideological statement, the Kanaky Agreement rejects the long-standing model of colonial governance and calls for a decisive shift toward full sovereignty. It outlines the movement’s opposition to any arrangement that falls short of independence.
The document was formally adopted on April 26, 2025, during an FLNKS congress held in Kanaky. At the gathering, FLNKS leader Christian Thein, who is currently imprisoned in France, addressed participants through a message emphasizing that independence must be defined by a specific timeline and supported by a clear political roadmap.
