Boeing wins major contract to build "most lethal" F-47 stealth fighter

22 March 2025 13:21

President Donald Trump has awarded Boeing a multi-billion dollar contract to develop the US Air Force's most advanced and lethal fighter jet, the Next Generation Air Dominance aircraft. Known as the F-47, this sixth-generation stealth fighter will replace the Lockheed Martin F-22, marking a significant leap in military aviation technology.

During an announcement at the White House, Trump praised the F-47 as "the most lethal aircraft ever built," revealing that a version of the aircraft has been flying in secret for the last five years, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Designed for high-speed flight and unmatched manoeuvrability, the F-47 will also be capable of flying alongside unmanned drones in combat, highlighting its versatility in modern warfare.

Although the exact value of the contract was not disclosed, this deal is a significant victory for Boeing, which has faced challenges due to sluggish sales in both the commercial and military sectors, as well as several high-profile safety issues.

While the full design of the F-47 remains classified, it is reported to feature advanced sensors and engines that enhance its already impressive stealth capabilities. A brief glimpse of the aircraft was shown in an artistic rendering at the White House, but only a small portion of the jet, including its front landing gear, was visible.

Trump emphasized the aircraft's unmatched performance, saying, "There's never been anything even close to it, from speed to maneuverability, to what it can have, to payload." He also noted that the number 47 was chosen for the aircraft, calling it a "beautiful number" as it corresponds to his own status as both the 45th and 47th President of the United States. "The generals picked that title," he added.

The announcement also dealt a blow to Boeing's competitor, Lockheed Martin. Lockheed was recently eliminated from a separate competition to build a next-generation aircraft for the US Navy, and now faces mounting challenges with its F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Trade tensions between the US and its allies could jeopardize F-35 sales, with countries like Canada and Portugal reconsidering their orders for the aircraft.

The F-35, which costs around $85 million per unit (or up to $150 million with spare parts and support infrastructure), has seen about 1,100 units built and is currently in service with 16 military forces worldwide. However, growing concerns over the F-35's cost and effectiveness have led some countries to explore alternatives, including European options from Dassault and Saab, even if those planes lack the F-35's renowned stealth capabilities.

Elon Musk, a prominent ally of Trump, has previously expressed skepticism about manned fighter jets. He was present at the Pentagon ahead of the F-47 announcement, where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that Musk's visit was part of discussions about cost-cutting measures.
