BRICS foreign ministers reaffirm opposition to unilateral sanctions in New Delhi
Foreign ministers from the BRICS have reiterated their opposition to unilateral sanctions that are not authorised by the United Nations Security Council, according to a concluding statement released after their meeting in New Delhi.
According to the Chair’s Concluding Statement published by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the ministers condemned the use of unilateral coercive measures, arguing that such actions violate international law and have wide-ranging humanitarian consequences, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“The ministers condemned the imposition of unilateral coercive measures that contravene international law and reiterated that such measures, particularly in the form of unilateral economic sanctions and secondary sanctions, have far-reaching negative consequences for human rights, including the rights to development, health and food security, the entire population of sanctioned countries, disproportionately affecting the poor and vulnerable, exacerbating the digital divide and worsening environmental problems. They called for the lifting of such unlawful measures, which undermine international law as well as the principles and purposes of the UN Charter. They reaffirmed that BRICS member states do not impose or support sanctions that have not been approved by the UN Security Council and that contravene international law,” the document states.
