Britain fully supports sale of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Türkiye

06 May 2025 16:27

The United Kingdom has loudly declared its firm support for the sale of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Türkiye.

Despite objections from Germany, London stated: “We are at the negotiating table and ready for an agreement” that would transform Ankara’s air power, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.

Following its exclusion from the F-35 program, Türkiye—seeking to modernise its air force—has intensified contacts with the UK to purchase Eurofighter Typhoon Tranche 4 jets.

In recent weeks, the Turkish Ministry of National Defence submitted its “Requirement Definition Document” to the UK Ministry of Defence.

UK Defence Minister Maria Eagle told the British Parliament that “the United Kingdom fully supports the sale of Eurofighter Typhoons to Türkiye” and that bilateral negotiations with Germany are ongoing.

Türkiye’s request includes 40 of the latest Typhoon Tranche 4 fighters, divided into two batches of 20. These jets feature the most advanced air-to-air weapons configuration. Additionally, the purchase of used aircraft is being considered for training purposes and to facilitate the transition to new operations.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, multirole fighter aircraft developed by a consortium of European aerospace companies from the UK (BAE Systems), Germany (Airbus Defence and Space), Italy (Leonardo), and Spain. It is designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat, and is known for its agility, advanced avionics, and adaptability in modern warfare.

The latest version—Tranche 4—features upgraded radar systems, electronic warfare capabilities, and compatibility with next-generation weapons, making it one of the most advanced fighter jets currently in production. Operated by several NATO and allied air forces, the Typhoon serves as a key element of European and transatlantic air power.
