Calls for Biden's impeachment grow after approval of Ukraine's long-range strikes on Russia
President Joe Biden has, for the first time, authorized Ukraine to use US-provided long-range missiles to strike Russian territory.
According to foreign media sources, the decision some believe could lead to severe global consequences, Caliber.Az reports.
President-elect Donald Trump’s allies have expressed alarm, with Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., set to become Trump’s national security adviser, warning, “This is another step up the escalation ladder, and no one knows where this is going.”
Trump's former acting Director of National Intelligence, Ric Grenell, criticized Biden on X, writing, “No one anticipated that Joe Biden would ESCALATE the war in Ukraine during the transition period. This is as if he is launching a whole new war.” Donald Trump Jr. also took to X, claiming, “The Military Industrial Complex seems to want to make sure they get World War 3 going before my father has a chance to create peace and save lives.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., echoed these concerns, saying, “On his way out of office, Joe Biden is dangerously trying to start WWIII… The American people gave a mandate on Nov 5th against these exact America last decisions.” Meanwhile, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., called Biden’s move “an unconstitutional Act of War,” adding, “This is an impeachable offence.”
Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer, while not confirming specific details about the missile strikes, indicated that the involvement of North Korean forces in Russia influenced the decision. “We will make our policy decisions based on the circumstances we identify on the battlefield,” he stated.
The ATACMS missile system, capable of striking targets up to 190 miles away, represents a significant escalation. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the US move as “a qualitatively new round of tension,” accusing the outgoing administration of “adding fuel to the fire.”
Rebekah Koffler, a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer, suggested the reports might be a tactic to disrupt Trump, adding, “Biden knows the danger of dragging the US into conflict with Russia. But if the reports are true… Putin will likely proceed to destroying Ukraine.”
Congressional hawks, however, welcomed the shift. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Mo., criticized the administration for delays, stating, “The decision does not excuse the administration’s deliberate slow-walking of items and assistance long authorized by Congress.” Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, called the authorization “long overdue,” emphasizing that President Biden should have acted sooner in response to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy's appeals.
The announcement coincided with a massive Russian missile and drone attack targeting Ukraine's infrastructure, intensifying concerns about the escalating conflict.
