Ceremony in Kilis celebrates inauguration of Azerbaijani gas delivery to Syria
A ceremony marking the launch of Azerbaijani natural gas supplies to Syria via Türkiye took place in the Turkish border city of Kilis, underscoring a new phase of regional energy cooperation.
The event brought together high-ranking delegations from Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Syria, and Qatar, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
It follows the recent agreement signed between the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and the Syrian government, signalling the completion of all technical preparations for the project.
In the initial stage, the pipeline will deliver approximately 1.2 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas annually to Syria. The gas will be routed through Kilis and supplied to power stations in the Syrian cities of Aleppo and Homs. These facilities are expected to produce between 1,200 and 1,300 megawatts of electricity, contributing significantly to Syria’s efforts to restore its war-damaged energy infrastructure.
The deal is regarded as a strategic breakthrough for both sides. For Syria, the new supply will help revive its struggling electricity network, while for Azerbaijan and Türkiye, it enhances their roles in regional energy development. Ankara, in particular, sees the project as reinforcing its vision of becoming a key transit and energy hub linking suppliers in the Caspian region to consumers in the Middle East.
The agreement was formalised during Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa’s official visit to Baku on July 12.
A memorandum of understanding was signed by SOCAR Supervisory Board Chairman Mikayil Jabbarov and Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad Al-Bashir, laying the groundwork for what officials describe as a long-term strategic partnership.
