China demands Russia investigate "tough" treatment of Chinese at border
The Chinese Embassy in the Russian Federation announced the "tough and excessive actions" of Russian law enforcement agencies on the Russian-Kazakh border against the Chinese. The diplomatic mission said their rights were "seriously violated" and demanded an investigation. Russia has not yet commented on this.
According to Kommersant, the incident took place on July 29 on the Russian-Kazakh border, the Chinese embassy said. Five Chinese citizens were "repeatedly interrogated for four hours." They were denied entry and had their tourist visas revoked.
The Embassy studied the video of the incident from its participants and made a presentation to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the FSB and the border service. “This is contrary to the overall picture of Chinese-Russian friendship and the growing trend of friendly humanitarian exchanges between countries,” the Chinese diplomatic mission said in a statement.
It demanded, "to explain the cause of the incident, take measures to eliminate the negative impact and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future." The diplomats called on the Russian Federation to conduct an "additional investigation into excessive law enforcement actions" by border guards and provide the Chinese side with a "satisfactory response."
