Moldovan oligarch, former party leader detained in Greece
Vladimir Plahotniuc, the most powerful oligarch and former leader of Moldova's Democratic Party, has been detained in Greece, authorities confirmed.
According to a statement released by the General Inspectorate of Police in Moldova, Interpol’s official communication channels in Athens notified Moldovan law enforcement of the arrest of two Moldovan nationals, including Plahotniuc, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Plahotniuc has been a fugitive since 2020, listed on international wanted notices for alleged involvement in a range of serious offenses, including the establishment of a criminal organization, money laundering, and other grave crimes.
In addition to facing criminal investigations, the businessman has been subjected to sanctions imposed by the European Union Council, reflecting his controversial standing in regional politics and business.
The arrest marks a significant development in ongoing efforts to hold high-profile figures accountable amid Moldova’s complex political landscape and broader regional anti-corruption initiatives.
Further details regarding the circumstances of the detention and potential extradition proceedings are awaited from both Greek and Moldovan authorities.
