China launches heavy-lift Changying-8 cargo drone into skies
The Changying-8 cargo unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) successfully completed its maiden flight at an airport in Zhengzhou, Central China’s Henan province, marking a significant milestone in the country’s development of large-scale unmanned transport platforms.
The fixed-wing cargo UAV is developed by Beijing Beifang Changying UAV Technology Co., Ltd. and is China’s first 7-tonne-class cargo UAV platform validated through flight testing, China Daily reports.
Designed for high-capacity transport, the Changying-8 features an ultra-large cargo compartment with a volume of 18 cubic metres, a maximum takeoff weight of 7 tons, and a maximum payload capacity of 3.5 tons. The aircraft is capable of meeting diverse logistics demands, accommodating conventional supplies as well as fresh and cold-chain goods and emergency equipment.
According to its specifications, the UAV has a maximum range exceeding 3,000 kilometres, enabling long-distance operations across varied environments.
The Changying-8 incorporates breakthroughs in efficient transportation, flexible adaptability, and all-domain operations, offering critical equipment support for the development of the low-altitude economy and the strengthening of emergency response systems.
The aircraft is expected to be deployed in a wide range of scenarios, including long-distance logistics transport, emergency rescue delivery, border-area supply missions, and operations in complex terrain.
