China’s game-changing aircraft carrier poised to shift Asia-Pacific naval balance

24 May 2025 08:58

According to a fresh story, Jason Deegan explores that China has taken a major leap forward in naval power with the Fujian aircraft carrier, the largest conventionally powered warship the country has ever built. Recently entering a new phase of rigorous sea trials, the Fujian showcases advanced technologies that signal a new era in maritime strength—drawing close attention from military experts worldwide.

Launched in June 2022, the Fujian marks a significant upgrade over China’s previous carriers. Beyond its size, the ship is equipped with state-of-the-art systems designed to expand China’s naval reach. After initial testing, the carrier returned to waters near Shanghai for an intensive series of trials aimed at pushing its capabilities to the limit.

A standout feature is the Fujian’s electromagnetic catapult system, a major breakthrough in Chinese naval aviation. Unlike earlier carriers that used ski-jump ramps, the Fujian can now launch fully loaded fighter jets more quickly and efficiently. The vessel has tested aircraft like the J-15T and the stealthy J-35 fighters, both tailored for this new platform.

With a displacement of 80,000 tons, the Fujian can carry a larger air wing, increasing operational flexibility and enabling China to project air power over longer distances—an essential advantage in the competitive Asia-Pacific maritime theater.

This carrier’s trio of electromagnetic catapults puts it on par with the most advanced ships worldwide, including the US Navy’s Gerald R. Ford-class carriers. The system allows faster, more reliable launches while reducing wear on aircraft. A naval aviation expert described it as “a complete game-changer in carrier operations,” likening it to upgrading from a slingshot to a precision railgun.

Beyond launching jets, the Fujian is designed to host a variety of aircraft—including upgraded J-15 fighters, the J-35 stealth fighter, KJ-600 early warning planes, and JL-10 trainers—enhancing surveillance, reconnaissance, and pilot training capabilities critical for sustained naval missions.

Having started catapult training late last year, the Fujian’s progress signals China’s move toward full operational status, with integration into the People’s Liberation Army Navy expected soon.

Geopolitically, the Fujian’s deployment shifts naval power balances in the Asia-Pacific amid growing territorial disputes and navigation tensions. By fielding such an advanced carrier, China is not only bolstering maritime defense but also sending a clear message about its expanding naval ambitions.

As one naval strategist put it, “It’s a signal that China is not only building ships; it’s building power projection capabilities that demand attention.”

With the Fujian nearing full service, global observers are focused not on if China will challenge established naval powers, but on how this transformation will redefine naval warfare and international security in the years ahead.
