11 June 2026 13:19

Member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have discussed cooperation in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes during the 27th meeting of the CIS Commission on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, held in Almaty.

According to a press release from the CIS, cited by Caliber.Az, the meeting brought together representatives of profile ministries, agencies and organisations from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as officials from the CIS Executive Committee.

Participants reviewed prospects for expanding cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear energy, including issues related to nuclear power generation, nuclear safety and the adoption of modern technologies. Anar Dzhanakhmedov, Deputy Director of the Department for Economic Cooperation at the CIS Executive Committee, noted that member states are increasingly incorporating nuclear energy into their energy balances to strengthen energy security and develop high-tech industries.

Akylbek Mazaripov, First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, was elected chairman of the commission.

During the meeting, participants also considered preliminary results of a research programme conducted at Kazakhstan’s materials science tokamak for 2024–2026, aimed at advancing controlled thermonuclear fusion technologies.

In addition, the commission approved a draft programme on the safe management of obsolete pesticides in CIS countries and supported Kazakhstan’s initiative to establish a Regional Competence Council on the nuclear fuel cycle and radioactive waste management.

The next meeting of the commission is scheduled to take place in the third quarter of 2027 in Kyrgyzstan.
