Colombian congressmen welcome Azerbaijan's efforts to achieve peace with Armenia
Members of the Colombia–Azerbaijan Friendship Group of the Colombian House of Representatives have addressed an open letter to Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to the country, Mammad Talibov, on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the Khojaly genocide and in support of the restoration of the right of return for Western Azerbaijanis.
The letter states that the act of genocide committed by Armenian armed formations on February 26, 1992, against the civilian population of the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly remains one of the most tragic chapters in human history. It highlights that 613 Azerbaijanis were brutally killed that night, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly people, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azerbaijani media.
The letter notes that Colombia has not remained indifferent to this tragedy. In various documents adopted by the country’s Congress over the years, the Khojaly massacre was strongly condemned and recognized as an act of genocide. The parliamentarians paid tribute to the victims of the tragedy and expressed their deepest condolences to the government and people of Azerbaijan, emphasizing their view of Azerbaijan as a brotherly nation.
The letter also welcomes Azerbaijan’s efforts to achieve a lasting peace with Armenia and normalize bilateral relations. It expresses hope that the right of Western Azerbaijanis to return with dignity to their ancestral lands will soon be realized.
In conclusion, the letter reaffirms Colombia’s solidarity with the people of Azerbaijan and its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through deepening friendly ties.
