Commissioner: Armenia’s move toward EU candidacy sends encouraging signal
The European Union regards the law adopted by the Armenian Parliament to initiate the process of joining the EU as encouraging, particularly because it reflects the will of the Armenian people.
According to Caliber.Az, citing Armenian media, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement Policy, Marta Kos, made the statement in response to a question about how the EU evaluates the law adopted by the Armenian Parliament to begin the EU accession process.
Another question was whether discussions with Armenian officials had indicated that Armenia was preparing to apply for EU candidate status.
“We view this decision as very encouraging, also because it expresses the will of the Armenian people. To begin the process, Armenia must submit an application for candidate status, which has not yet happened, and, of course, the member states must give the green light. We will see what happens. Even if this does not occur, everything we are doing now can also contribute to Europe’s future, and when I speak about Europe’s future, I am not referring only to membership,” Kos said.
In March 2025, the Armenian Parliament passed a law to start the process of joining the European Union. The bill on the EU accession process was submitted to the National Assembly through the civic initiative “Euroreferendum.” Within the established timeframe, the initiative collected 60,000 signatures, surpassing the required 50,000.
