COP29: Türkiye plans key presentation on climate goals for 2053

10 November 2024 12:01

Turkish channel NTV reported on Türkiye's objectives for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), to be held in Azerbaijan.

The channel emphasized that Türkiye is developing a new Roadmap for its long-term climate change strategy, which will be unveiled at COP29, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The report quoted Prof. Halil Hasar, head of Türkiye’s Climate Change Authority, who highlighted the serious social and economic consequences of global climate change for humanity. He recalled the discussions from last year’s COP28 in Dubai, which focused on the energy sector’s environmental impact.

"The main agenda of COP29, however, will be the adoption of the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), i.e. the issue of climate finance," Prof. Hasar said, recalling the commitments of developed countries to allocate $100 billion to developing countries for climate goals.

"NCQG involves increasing this climate finance in line with the needs of developing countries," Prof. Hasar continued, describing Türkiye as a “bridge” between developed and developing states. He noted that discussions at COP29 in Baku would be more active and longer due to the introduction of the NCQG.

Regarding Türkiye’s participation in the summit, Prof. Hasar pointed out that Türkiye’s share in global greenhouse gas emissions is under 1%.

"It is important for us to leave an environmentally healthier planet for future generations. This is our duty. It is important to utilise every opportunity to achieve this goal. Türkiye is ready to take active steps in this direction," he emphasized, stressing that environmental commitments should not remain on paper.

Prof. Hasar also mentioned that numerous panel discussions and other events would take place at Türkiye's pavilion during COP29, which will include an exchange of views on the Zero Waste Project initiated by Turkish First Lady Emine Erdogan.

"Türkiye will be represented at the climate summit in Azerbaijan at the highest level. The roadmap for Türkiye’s long-term climate change strategy, designed to meet Ankara's goals of zero waste emissions by 2053, will be unveiled," he said, expressing confidence that COP29 would be extremely busy.

Finally, Prof. Hasar remarked that the fact the global event is being held in Azerbaijan, a brotherly country, makes Türkiye responsible for maximum participation in the event.
