COVID surge puts Russian tourists’ Thailand trips under threat

Travel plans for Russian tourists heading to Thailand later this year could face disruptions amid a rise in COVID-19 cases, SHOT reports.

The report said a number of Russian tourists who have already paid for holidays at Thai resorts in October–December have been warned about possible difficulties with their trips due to the increase in infections.

Although no tours have been canceled so far, the situation remains uncertain and could change, according to the report. Tourists are reportedly being offered Vietnam as an alternative destination in Asia.

Thailand has recorded around 135,700 COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the year, including nearly 65,000 cases between August 9 and September 8. The highest numbers have been reported in major tourist destinations such as Pattaya, Bangkok and Phuket.

At least 26 people have died from COVID-19 in Thailand since the start of the year.

Thai authorities have linked the increase in infections to the rainy season. However, no restrictions are currently in place for foreign arrivals, and resorts, hotels and other tourist facilities continue to operate normally.
